How to Play Blight: Survival
A beginner map of the fantasy, modes, and decisions you will face as a Writhen.
Blight: Survival is a third-person medieval action-horror experience built for tense PvE. You play as one of the Writhens—warriors willing to enter the no man’s land between warring kingdoms where a new strain of Blight rises from the dead. This getting-started guide explains how to play based on official Steam copy, trailers, and developer interviews. The game is not released yet; treat every system note as pre-launch information that may evolve.
What you are signing up for
Expect visceral melee, atmospheric exploration, and mission loops inspired by rogue-lites and extraction games. You can play entirely solo or invite up to three friends for seamless co-op. There is no PvP focus at launch—developers have stressed a PvE-first experience, with any future PvP described as opt-in if it ever arrives.
The core fantasy in plain language
Two kingdoms bleed each other dry. Between them, the Blight feeds on spilled blood and turns fallen people into monsters. Civilians cannot cleanse it. Your brotherhood can. Expeditions leave a stronghold hub, push into corrupted maps, fight humans and infected, scavenge, and either return with spoils or gamble for a deeper push toward the infection’s source.
How a session roughly flows
Public materials describe a large hub that gates mission maps rather than a pure open world. From that hub you kit up, enter a dangerous zone, complete objectives, loot, and constantly reassess risk. Dying costs the time, equipment, and resources you committed to that mission—so every fight and every “one more room” call matters.
Combat at a glance
Combat is directional and weighty, described by the team as a hybrid between Dark Souls timing and Mount & Blade facing. New players can land basic exchanges; veterans chase posture breaks, parries, shields, and brutal finishers. For the full picture, continue to the Combat System and Posture & Finishers pages after this overview.
Loadouts without classes
There is no traditional class lock. Weapons, armor, and talents shape your Writhen. Footage has already shown fast one-handed swords, close-range daggers, and heavy Zweihander swings, with more weapon types—including ranged—planned later. Start browsing the Weapons and Talents guides once you understand the mission loop.
Solo versus co-op first decision
If you prefer full control of pacing and loot calls, begin with the Solo guide. If you already have a fireteam, jump to the Co-op guide and agree on callouts before playtests open wider. Either path still benefits from Mission Survival thinking: extract when the bag is rich, push when the squad is healthy and information is clear.

Common beginner misconceptions
Myth: this is a battle royale. Reality: PvE expedition action-horror. Myth: friends are mandatory. Reality: solo is supported. Myth: wishlists mean an imminent launch. Reality: officials ruled out 2025 and 2026 release years. Myth: guns define the meta. Reality: melee-first at launch.
Ninety-minute mental rehearsal
Minutes 0–20: rewatch the reveal and note silhouettes. Minutes 20–40: read Combat System and call attack directions out loud. Minutes 40–60: write green/yellow/red extract rules from Mission Survival. Minutes 60–75: pick a comfort weapon archetype. Minutes 75–90: finish the Playtest Checklist account block even if no wave is live.
Close-the-tab checklist
Wishlist on Steam, join official Discord, bookmark Playtest Squad, and decide whether your first hands-on hour is solo learning or co-op chaos. Orientation beats rewatching the same trailer without a plan for Blight: Survival.
